Cheapest Intake Possible

Here is how to build the cheapest and simplest intake for your 1.6l Spec Miata.

  1. Go to Home Depot and find the gutter aisle.

  2. Buy this piece for $4.31

  3. Use tin snips or heavy duty scissors to cut it like so:First Cut
  4. It should look something like this:

  5. Now cut off most of the sides:

  6. After you’ve removed your airflow meter from the car, mark on the flange where the studs from the intake side of the meter will line up.

  7. Drill the holes with a 5/16″ bit.  It’s going to catch once the bit “bites” so watch out.Drill The Holes
  8. Holes are drilled, now it just needs to be cleaned up with a file.Holes are Drilled
  9. Not pretty, but it works!

  10. I attached our K&N Filter directly to the flange.  Since it had a 3″ opening, I wrapped several layers of duct tape around the flange to make a tight fit.  Total cost: Less than $40.  So far so good!
